Dedalus in Motion

I’ve found that very few american viewers “get” british humor.  It tends to be a bit too dry, a bit too sardonic for our culture’s tastes.  Unlike the mainstream brand of humor here in the states (exemplified by the success of films like Borat and There’s Something About Mary), it relies more on wit than on bathroom humor.  While it, like Borat, relentlessly makes fun of just about everyone, its intent seems a bit less profane.  And while british humor is certainly crude, it doesn’t rely on the cum-in-hair antics of There’s Something About Mary.  Instead, it plays upon hot tempers and foul language, even in the most inappropriate places (say, the UN headquarters in New York City...).

That said, most audiences will think the trailer for In the Loop shows many of the more funny parts.  Or, more to the point, boils down the place where british and american humor overlap to a few concise snippets well-chosen by the marketing team.

Still, for lovers of The Office (the original british version) or Absolutely Fabulous, In the Loop will be a treat.  Snappy, verbose writing, well-delivered by a capable ensemble.  Scathing criticisms of the english-speaking world and its politics on both sides of the Atlantic.  And strings of obscenity and insults  slurred with the charming composure only an englishman wearing a suit can get away with.
