Dedalus in Motion
I’m more a “see anything a director makes” than a “see anything an actor makes” kind of viewer. There are, however, a few exceptions - and Sandra Bullock is one of them. She’s the lucky recipient of the only crush I’ve ever had on a movie star (OK, Winnie in The Wonder Years...). Despite her charms, she’s made some real junk: The Lake House, Premonition, Forces of Nature.
The Proposal, however, is charming - in a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy kind of way. That is, it’s not as earnest as While You Were Sleeping or When Harry Met Sally, but does possess the charisma you’d expect of a Bullock romcom. Her comic timing and physical comedy are on point, the script has some funny moments, and she and Reynolds have solid chemistry. Craig T. Nelson, Betty White and Mary Steenburgen fill out the cast well.
Unfortunately, it falls into the usual romcom pitfalls: the seen-it-before animal antics, the disgustingly-wealthy male character, the stupid monologue at the climactic wedding. Still, it will give you what you go for.

The Proposal: Fun fluff that follows the formula
