Dedalus in Motion
Fado (literal translation - "destiny") is a genre unique to Portugal. While its origins can only be traced back as far as the 1820s, it's likely its history goes back much further. The themes of fado music tend to explore mourning, the sea and the life of the "common people," but really no topic is out of bounds. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word "saudade," which has no tidy translation; "longing," "pining," "nostalgia" all come close, but don't quite get there (but you get the general idea)...
Mainstream fado performances during the 20th century traditionally included a singer, a Portuguese guitar and a classical guitar, but more recent incarnations incorporate string quartets, drums, even a full orchestra.
Some enthusiasts claim that Fado's origins are a mixture of African slave rhythms with the traditional music of Portuguese sailors and Arabic influence. This makes Mariza's rise to fame all the more appropriate - as she was born in Africa unto a mother from Mozambique and a father from Lisboa.
I have heard the traditional fado - at festa while in Vilo Franca do Campo and in the streets and cafes of Ponta delgada, and must admit - I find it pretty dull. So when Catarina & I decided to get tickets to join my n-laws for Mariza as a gift, I was dreading it. But alas, Mariza brings fresh breath to a genre falling at the waysides of modernity. She possesses a charisma and a humbling energy (not to mention an incredible voice) that light up the stage. And the 5 piece band she travels with - 3 guitarists, a percussionist, and a piano/horn player - are brilliant musicians! Her light designer's incredible as well.
